Why Victoria Azarenka is wearing a PSG shirt at the Australian Open

Victoria Azarenka has revealed her son is behind her decision to wear a Paris-Saint Germain shirt at the Australian Open.

The 33-year-old kept her bid for a third crown at Melbourne Park alive by beating US star Jessica Pegula in straight sets on Tuesday and donned the jersey of the Ligue 1 giants after the match.

The two-time Australian Open winner has worn the kit throughout the tournament so far and last week explained the fashion choice was down to her seven-year-old son Leo.

'He saw me wearing the shirt; he will wear the shirt so we're matching,' she told the WTA's website.

'I have been supporting them [PSG] since 2012, since [David] Beckham was signed to the club. I have been a fan for a long time and been to many, many games.'

While his mum is a multiple Grand Slam winner, Leo appears more inclined to pursue a career in football than follow Azarenka on the tennis court.

'He wants to play at Paris Saint-Germain. That's his dream,' the Belarusian continued.

'I'm a soccer mum now and I love that,' she added.

'I love supporting. I'm obnoxious, like absolutely the most obnoxious.

'I yell, but I'm very positive. I'm actually very proud because it's a completely different emotion for me to support my son. I have no shame screaming for him, like zero.'

The world No25, Azarenka beat Pegula 6-4 6-1 to reach her first Australian Open semi-final since she won her second consecutive title at Melbourne Park in 2013 - the last woman to successfully defend her crown.

Up until this week, the Belarusian had last made it to the quarter-finals back in 2016 and had missed the tournament altogether three times in four years between 2017 and 2020.

The former world No1 will face Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina for a spot in Saturday's final after the Kazakh 22nd seed beat former Roland Garros champion Jelena Ostapenko.

'It's so amazing to be in the semi-final of another Grand Slam,' Azarenka, who remains the last woman to successfully defend her Australian Open title, said after the match.

'I felt especially last year my tennis wasn't bad but I wasn't really mentally there to go out there.

'I played with a lot of fear, with a lot of anxiety and it really was difficult to be brave and to make the right choices in an important moment when you feel anxious, when you feel hesitant.

'I worked a lot on my mindset, challenging myself on things that I wouldn't really do before and try to push myself forward.

'Because when you achieved great success, sometimes you become conservative and you're a bit more hesitant to try new things.

'This off-season I was like I'll just be open-minded trying new things and put my head down and work hard.'
