Tennis bad boy Nick Kyrgios withdraws from Indian Wells leaving big Wimbledon complications

Nick Kyrgios has pulled out of the upcoming Masters 1000 tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami as he continues recovery from surgery - and it could spell disaster for his Wimbledon campaign.

The 27-year-old hasn't played any tennis since December and his last singles match on the ATP tour was in October.

The 2022 Wimbledon finalist was ruled out of the Australian Open after an MRI revealed a cyst as a result of a small lateral meniscus tear that required surgery to clean out and repair.

Outside of the grand slams, Indian Wells and Miami are two of the biggest tournaments of the year, and Kyrgios' absence will have serious ramifications on his rankings.

The world No. 19 was a quarter-finalist at Indian Wells last year and reached the fourth round in Miami, which earned him significant ranking points.

Kyrgios looks to tumble at least six ranking places and outside the top-20, and could drop further if he ends up pulling out in Houston.

If he falls out of the top 32 Kyrgios will no longer get automatic seeding for grand slams.

The Aussie isn't a fan of playing on clay, which he has said 'sucks' but revealed last year that he'll make a return to Roland Garros because his girlfriend Costeen wants to visit Paris.

'It will be good for me to earn some more money, although I would have preferred to stay at home,' he said.

'I know I can do great results on clay. I beat Roger [Federer], [Stan] Wawrinka, I played a final in Estoril… My girl wants to get to know the city so I will have to go this year.'

Another reason why Kyrgios might want to play in France is to try and bolster his world ranking.

If for some reason he decides to not compete, the Canberra product will have just three grass court tournaments in which to bank points for Wimbledon.

Tennis fans were left disappointed to find out Kyrgios won't be in action at Indian Wells and Miami.

'Despite a more optimistic prognosis in Melbourne, Nick Kyrgios has pulled out of both Indian Wells and Miami,' wrote tennis journalist Ben Rothenberg on Twitter.

'Somewhat tough to imagine him coming back on clay, given his feelings about that surface historically, but that's his only option for a couple months after those...'

'What a bummer. Tough to have the star of break point not be able to play any tennis,' commented another.

'Get better soon, Nick,' said a third.
