Throughout her career, Serena Williams has built a reputation synonymous with excellence. That’s why it shouldn’t be surprising that she’s teaming up with Michelob ULTRA for the third time as part of their latest Super Bowl LVII campaign. The New Members Day commercial finds Williams and a slew of other celebrities engaging in friendly competition on the golf course while highlighting how golf is making its way into mainstream culture. For Williams, she was happy to see that the advertisement included equal representation of men and women.
“Michelob ULTRA has made a commitment to increasing the visibility of women in sports, and I feel like this year is just another example of them putting their money where their mouth is,” Williams told For(bes) The Culture. “In fact, they made a $100 million commitment a couple of years ago to do that. So it's super cool to have the exact number of male and female athletes represented in the ad.”
While the star-studded advertisement speaks to how golf is becoming more of a mainstream sport, it also shines a light on how golf culture is becoming more inclusive and diverse. Williams believes this is evident due to the rising diversity of people who celebrate the sport.
“I think golf is definitely changing to be more inclusive and more fun, and you see that more through the different types of people. There's a younger culture, and it's not really about country clubs and elitist attitudes anymore or so-called gatekeeping. It's about energetic fans, and inclusive communities, and younger, diverse faces. So I think that people are celebrating it with a new spirit.”
When it comes to her favorite part of shooting the commercial, Williams says the opportunity to film with other athletes was a highlight as she doesn’t get to do that every day.
“We had a lot of fun. I think my favorite part about filming it was just having an opportunity to shoot such a fun ad with so many great athletes and personalities because it’s something that I don't do every day. So for me, it was an ‘I'm having a good day at work’ kind of moment.”
While the superstar has mastered the sport of tennis, she’s also looking forward to incorporating more golf into her lifestyle.
“I definitely am looking forward to doing more golf,” Williams said. ”I definitely want to do more golf, if only for the outfits. I don't expect to be the world's greatest golfer, but I definitely want to do more of it.”
