Tennis champion Jelena Dokic has reflected on he mental health journey after splitting from her boyfriend Tin Bikic in January.
The 39-year-old, who is now single for the first time in 18 years, told The Australian Women's Weekly that she's looking down the barrel of 40 with a more positive mindset than before.
'At first I didn't know what that would look like and I was a bit lost, but now I'm good,' she said.
'It's actually made me realise that I'm very strong. I have to be honest, I love to be in a relationship, to love someone and be loved back, but I've realised that I can be on my own.'
Jelena said she hopes to travel and spend time with her friends next year.
'I think it comes from being really resilient and being a fighter. I've always had this belief in me, never to give up, no matter what I was going through. But also I have no problem admitting to how I felt,' she said.
Jelena noted that she did have dark moments where she questioned how she could possibly go on, but has since found peace.
In October, the athlete reflected on her past struggles with depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder in an Instagram post for World Mental Health Day.
At the time, she shared a photo of herself during a challenging time where she almost 'ended' her life.
Revealing that she's now 'in such a different space', Jelena urged her followers to 'check in' on one another as you never know what 'battle they are fighting'.
Jelena announced her split from Tin in January.
Alongside a photo of the pair together, with a rip graphic down the middle, she wrote: 'After almost 19 years together, Tin and I have decided to go our separate ways. Sometimes these things happen, people grow apart and it's for the best.'
