Bill Gates could be walking into a family that is as complex as his own after DailyMail.com revealed that the Microsoft founder was dating Paula Hurd, the widow of former Oracle CEO Mark Hurd.
One of Paula's daughters is award-winning investigative journalist Kathryn Hurd and her other daughter, Kelly, has married into a politically connected family with deep ties to Bill and Hillary Clinton.
In 2010, Mark Hurd was forced out as CEO of tech giant Hewlett-Packard after he was found to have had a two-year long affair with a company consultant named Jodie Fisher.
He reportedly paid over $1 million in hush money to keep sexual harassment allegations that Fisher, an actress and former softcore porn star, had made quiet.
Gates' budding romance with the widow comes two years after his split from wife Melinda French Gates in 2021 after 34 years together, and 27 years of marriage. People Magazine reports that his new girlfriend has yet to meet any of Gates' children.
The billionaire's ex-wife, and mother to his kids, previously opened up about her 'unbelievably painful' divorce and explained that she 'just couldn't stay in that marriage anymore'. While, Paula and Mark Hurd were married for nearly 30 years until his death from cancer in 2019.
San Francisco based reporter Kathryn Hurd has a Master's Degree in Investigative Reporting from UC Berkeley's Graduate School of Journalism in addition to a degree in Political Science and Sociology from Wake Forest University.
According to her website, she's currently developing an investigative story on systemic issues within child welfare agencies for her alma-mater's Investigative Reporting Program.
In 2021, the Gates Foundation donated nearly $800,000 to the University of Berkeley's journalism program.
Kathryn was part of the team that won a prestigious Polk Award in 2022 for the PBS documentary on the alt-right and domestic terrorism, American Insurrection. The seven-part series culminated in the January 6 Capitol riot.
Her other work has been seen in Buzzfeed, ProPublica and the San Francisco Examiner. On Kathryn's LinkedIn page, she says that she interned at the New York Times and CNBC.
In an interview on American Insurrection with Poynter, Kathryn says that she grew up in the Bay Area and worked in public relations before going into journalism.
She described working on American Insurrection saying: 'I didn’t understand the emotional toll that this work can take until I was actually in it.'
In 2018, Kelly Hurd married Tommy Umberg, the son of Democratic California State Senator and retired Army Colonel Tom Umberg and Brigadier General Robin Umberg.
During Bill Clinton's reelection effort in 1996, Tom Umberg served as chairman of the California re-elect campaign. In 1997, he was appointed as the deputy director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy, serving until 2000.
In 2000, Clinton appointed Brigadier General Robin Umberg to the board of the US Military Academy at West Point. She served in the operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm.
Robin Umberg is considered a pioneer for women serving in the military. She retired from active service in 2010.
In a 2020 interview, she said: 'At the end of my career, women would come up to me and say, "You led the way ... You moved up in a man's world."
'It made me squeamish. I may have opened doors, but I did not have the courage of the women who came after me. When I was harassed, I didn’t have the courage to speak up. I felt if I said something, I might not move up,' she continued.
Kelly and her husband live in Northern California together with their two children. According to her LinkedIn page, she works as a marketing manager for Visa and is a graduate of Baylor University.
The pair's father, Mark Hurd, was found in 2011 to have made 'aggressive romantic advances' over several years towards consultant Jodie Fisher which resulted in her accusing him of sexual harassment.
Fisher's lawyer accused the CEO of seeking sexual favors in exchange for giving her contracts. The scandal resulted in Mark Hurd paying Fisher $1 million in hush money.
Outspoken Oracle CEO Larry Ellison blasted HP's board for being 'cowardly' and promptly hired Mark Hurd with a salary of around $3 million.
For her part, Fisher continued her attempts at becoming an actress, appearing in episodes of NCIS, Little Big League and the reality show Age of Low as well as a remake of the movie Easy Rider, which was described as 'staggeringly bad.'
Earlier in her career, Fisher appeared in softcore pornographic films such as Intimate Obsession, Passion and Roman: Ocean of Dreams and Sheer Passion.
A friend of Gates and Paula Hurd told DailyMail.com: 'They've been together over a year and she's always described as a "mystery woman," but it's no mystery to their inner circle that they're in a romantic relationship.'
Once a tech executive herself, Hurd is now an event planner and organizer, and philanthropist.
Paula and Gate were seen watching the Men's Singles Final together at the Australian Open in Melbourne during a trip Down Under.
The pair also traveled up to Sydney where the billionaire met with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
Gates and Paula took the opportunity to take a romantic stroll around the city as they stopped to admire the panoramic views of the harbor and check out the famed Opera House.
Photos of the two taking in the sights were published at the time, but Paula had not been identified.
It's likely the couple may have bonded over their love of tennis.
Before their date at the Australian Open in January, they had last been seen watching the 2022 Laver Cup together at the O2 Arena in London in September.
The avid sports fans were also photographed at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California as far back as October 2021, however, they had been sitting a few rows away from each other at the time.
Paula, whose maiden name is Kalupa, was working as an NCR executive in 1990 when she married her late husband, who spent 25 years climbing up the ranks at the company.
The Hurds were longtime donors to Mark's alma mater Baylor University where they contributed a lead gift to kick off its $1.1billion philanthropic campaign in 2018.
The generous donation helped fund a brand new $60million welcome center named after the couple is set to open on campus later this year.
Despite earning her marketing degree from the University of Texas at Austin in 1984, Paula joined her husband in making major contributions to Baylor, such as supporting the university's national championship tennis program.
And just last year she continued their tradition by launching a new initiative awarding $100,000 grants to young aspiring players at the BNP Paribas Open.
The program was announced on March 14 and just four days later, Paula and Bill would be pictured together watching the Women's Tennis Association semifinal match in Indian Wells.
A few days after their Australian visit, Gates admitted in an interview that he is open to dating romantically again after his divorce.
When asked whether he would like to find love again in a sit-down with the BBC during his visit to Kenya last week, he answered: 'Sure, I'm not a robot.'
