Amazing video shows how Australian Open prepares champions' trophies in the blink of an eye

The Australian Open has released a video that reveals how the champions' trophies are prepared so quickly - after recent controversy surrounding a missing detail from Aryna Sabalenka's award.

The clip posted to TikTok on Sunday evening shows what happened backstage at Melbourne Park in the moments after Novak Djokovic won his 10th Australian Open title against Stefanos Tsitsipas.

As the Serb ace claims victory, an engraver can be seen busily going to work on the Norman Brooks Challenge Cup and inscribing Djokovic's name and country of origin.

The behind-the-scenes video has been viewed more than 2 million times, and prompted many comments from tennis fans.

'Could've engraved that two weeks ago,' joked one TikTok user.

'Engrave the 2022 also. He was robbed of it,' commented another.

'@Australian Open Unban Russian flag,' said a third.

On Saturday, after Aryna Sabalenka's thrilling maiden grand slam triumph, fans noticed her country of origin was missing from the engraving on the winner's trophy.

Sabalenka is from Belarus, which is backing Russia's invasion of Ukraine and is therefore not currently recognised by the Association of Tennis Professionals or the Women's Tennis Association.

Australian Open entrants from Russia and Belarus are allowed to compete only if they do so as neutral players who don't play under their national flag or the name of their country.

The situation divided opinion on social media, with many believing that the move was 'childish' and 'shameful'.

'What an insult to #AustralianOpen2023 winner Aryna Sabalenka. So apparently 'offensive' in sport is her country to Ukraine, not only was her Belarus flag blocked out while she played, these low life pandering officials didn't have the decency to engrave her country on her trophy,' wrote one twitter user.

'Seeing pathetic childish woke #AusOpen wont show Grand Slam champion Aryna Sabalenka #Belarus flag, here you go. Well done, a great achievement, from an embarrassed Australian,' commented another.

'Could somebody please explain to me the diagnosis of the person who made the decision for this? Is Sabalenka an alien or what? Shame on you @AustralianOpen,' wrote a third.

Sabalenka didn't seem concerned with the absence of her country from the trophy in her post-match speech.

'Oh my god, I already have my name! Wow. This is just actually unbelievable. It's all the stars. All those names,' she exclaimed when looking at the award.
