Patrick Mahomes will add a women's soccer team to his investment portfolio as it was announced he is now a part owner of the KC Current of the National Women's Soccer League.
He joins his wife Brittany Mahomes - who had been a co-owner and founder of the team when it launched in December of 2020.
'I am thankful for the chance to join @brittanylynne as part of the @thekccurrent ownership team. She and the Longs have done an incredible job building a world-class organization and I am excited to join another championship-caliber club as it continues to make history,' he wrote on Twitter Tuesday morning.
'We are so thrilled to make this a family affair and have Patrick join as an owner,' Brittany Mahomes said in an official statement from the club.
'He has been a huge supporter behind-the-scenes. His passion for the Current is undeniable and I am glad that he will be with us as we continue on our journey to become the best in the NWSL.'
That same statement included remarks from Current founders Angie and Chris long, who added: 'Patrick is obviously a once-in-a-generation athlete and someone who has had an immeasurable impact on the Kansas City community.
'Working with Brittany has been a blessing. We are elated to now partner with Patrick too. The Mahomes are truly a remarkable family.'
The Current enjoyed great success in their second season in the league, finishing fifth in the league standings and going all the way to the NWSL Championship Game, where they lost to the Portland Thorns.
Mahomes is no stranger to investing in sports teams - having previously bought stakes in the Kansas City Royals of Major League Baseball in 2020 as well as Sporting Kansas City of MLS in 2021.
In addition to current teams, Mahomes joined the ownership group of an upcoming professional pickleball team alongside pro sports agent Rich Paul and tennis stars Naomi Osaka and Nick Kyrgios.
Mahomes is not the only person with ties to the NFL that has an ownership stake in an NWSL team.
Michael Schofield - a former NFL offensive lineman and husband to American women's hockey gold medalist Kendall Coyne Schofield - is a part owner of the Chicago Red Stars.
Former New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning is an investor in NJ/NY Gotham FC alongside retired WNBA icon Sue Bird and NBA star Kevin Durant.
The Wilf family - owners of the NFL's Minnesota Vikings - are the owners of Orlando Pride and its parent MLS club Orlando City SC.
