While moving house is exciting, it can also be emotional as it usually means you're closing the door on a chapter in your life to move on to the next big thing. To comfort themselves after this change, some people drive by their old house when they're in the area to revisit the memories they shared within its walls.
However, one couple took this one step further and asked the new homeowner whether they could have a tour around the property to see how it has changed. The new homeowner said: "I was just outside, at the end of the driveway, bringing up the trash cans and a car pulled up to me and stopped. It was the couple we bought our home from in May 2022. After a brief conversation, they asked if they could come inside and see what we had done with 'their home'."
She politely decline knowing she was home alone and the house was a "mess".
"My husband is out of town; the house is a mess with laundry everywhere; I had just finished working; I have two dogs to walk; and I just want to relax and watch some hockey tonight," she added on Reddit.
"They seemed miffed and kind of drove off in a huff."
But not wanting to take no for an answer, the couple got in contact with her husband hoping he'd grant them permission to have a nosey around.
She said: "My husband texted me a few minutes later asking me why I 'didnât let them come in'. They texted him after I said 'No, not tonight. Maybe another time when my husband is home.' We don't owe them anything!"
She went on to explain how she and her husband paid thousands over the asking price because they fell in love with the house and its location.
She says they even let the couple store their belongings in their garage for three months after they moved out because their new build wasn't ready and they ran out of money for storage.
"I wouldn't mind at all if they would like to come by at an agreed upon date and time, to tour our home," she added.
While most users agreed she did the right thing by turning them down, others shared how they "wouldn't dream" of visiting their old home as it's "intrusive" to the new owners.
One user said: "That's weird. It's not like you adopted a dog from them. You bought a house. They don't need to visit or check in on it."
Another user added: "Pop-bys are a huge pet peeve of mine. Text. Call. Email. Write a letter. I don't care who you are, unless it's an emergency don't pop by."
A third user said: "The fact they appeared unannounced when they clearly have your contact information rubs me the wrong way."
One more user added: "I won't even let family in my house unless itâs spotless! What are these people thinking!
"You can't just roll on over to someone's house unannounced expecting they drop everything and let you be a nosy pain in the a***! What planet do these people live on!
"I cannot stand when people turn up unannounced! I straight up refuse to let them in! Itâs so rude!"
