Most kids dream about growing up to be a professional athlete at some point during their childhood, but there aren’t many people who are able to see that wish come true.
NHL player Steven Lorentz was one of the lucky few who defied those odds, and he shared an awesome picture from an old yearbook 15 years after calling his shot.
I’m going to assume most people reading this aren’t intimately familiar with Steven Lorentz, a 28-year-old hailing from Ontario who signed a one-year deal with the Toronto Maple Leafs ahead of the NHL season that recently got underway.
As is the case with many kids who are raised in Canada, Lorentz was learning how to ice skate basically as soon as he learned how to walk, and he made a name for himself playing youth hockey in Waterloo before taking his talents in the junior level in the OHL.
The Carolina Hurricanes selected Lorentz in the seventh round of the 2015 NHL Draft, and he spent five seasons bouncing between the ECHL and AHL before making his NHL debut with the team in 2021. He spent two years with the franchise before heading to San Jose in 2022, and last season, he earned the right to call himself a Stanley Cup champion as a member of the Panthers.
Lorentz only posted three points in the 38 games he played for Florida, and he became a free agent after the team declined to offer him another deal. The Maple Leafs subsequently gave him a shot at training camp, and he took full advantage before getting the chance to ink a contract with the team he grew up rooting for.
On Tuesday, Toronto bounced back from a 1-0 loss to the Canadiens in their season opener (the first time they’d been shut out in 227 games) with a 4-2 win over the Devils in a contest where Lorentz earned First Star honors with a goal and an assist.
After the game, the team posted a picture of Lorentz in his childhood bedroom rocking some Maple Leafs pajamas in front of a poster of former captain Mats Sundin alongside a photo of him holding the puck he put in the net to score his first goal with the franchise.
Lorentz responded with a picture of his own, as he correctly predicted he’d be playing for the Maple Leafs in 15 years while calling his shot in his middle school yearbook.
You love to see it.
