Can you recognise the Australian cricket legend from his childhood photos?

Aussie cricket legend David Boon has left fans in stitches after photos emerged of the cult hero looking almost unrecognisable without his iconic moustache.

The 62-year-old appeared on Channel 7 show The Front Bar, with adorable childhood pictures showing the star batter long before he grew his famous face fur.

One of Australia's most popular cricketers of all-time thanks to his down-to-earth demeanour, squat build and sensational 107-Test career, Boon quite possibly also has the most recognisable 'mo' Down Under.

The Tasmanian batting icon told the show why and when he got his now-iconic 'cookie duster'.

'What an angel I was,' Boon laughed, referring to his childhood photos.

'In 1978, moustaches were right in. I left school and started growing it. It took about three years and a bit of fertilsation and then it got there.

'And it's only be off twice since.'

Boon racked up 7422 Test runs, including 21 centuries and a remarkable 23,413 First Class runs in total - primarily at his customary position of first drop.

But 'Boonie' is even more well-known as the Aussie 'everyman' who famously downed 58 cans of beer on a flight from Sydney to London for the Ashes.

He played hard, he partied hard, he could interact with the Queen or knock them back at the pub with the boys.

And he could sledge hard, must to the disgust of his mother Leslie, who played hockey for Australia.

'Mum taught me a lot. She was very calm about a lot of things, but she still had her rules,' Boon explained on The Front Bar.

'I did get a phone call in Brisbane in the dressing room once. 'Yes, Mum, what is it?'.

'She said 'I can lip read' and hung up.

'That's why I went to silly mid on and put a helmet on!'

These days Boon is an ICC match referee and the picture of seriousness.

But now his fans have a permanent reminder of the adorable, chubby-cheeked larrikin he once was.
