Blues notebook: Point-a-game forward Buchnevich sits out Monday workout

Buchnevich is slowed by a lower-body injury that has bothered him previously.

“Not sure yet,” Blues coach Craig Berube said when asked about Buchnevich’s status after Monday’s workout. “It’s an issue from before.”

One of the team’s more consistent players this season, Buchnevich is third in scoring with 15 goals and 23 assists for 38 points in 38 games. He trails only Jordan Kyrou (22G, 23A) and Robert Thomas (12G, 31A) in scoring.

With Buchnevich out, forward Logan Brown got an opportunity to work with the Blues’ second power-play unit. A 24-year-old forward, Brown has been limited to just nine games this season because of injury. In those games, he has two assists.

The son of former Blues defensemen Jeff Brown, he came into the season with high hopes and had two goals and an assist in two exhibition games before getting hurt initially. He’s batted injuries all season and last played on Dec. 29, against Chicago.

“I had a year like this in Juniors; it’s never fun when you’re hurt,” he said. “I came into the season feeling good, feeling like this’d be my chance to take my game to another level. Hopefully, the injuries are behind me and I can play some hockey and get into a little bit of a groove now.”

Asked about Brown, Berube said: “I’d like him to get more work in practice with us, but I don’t know if we’ll have that opportunity. We might need him (Tuesday).”

Depending on Buchnevich’s availability, Brown could suit up on then when the Blues host the Buffalo Sabres to close a seven-game homestand.

“Being off the ice as long as I was, it feels a little strange when you get back out there,” said Brown, who stands 6 feet 6 and weighs 218 pounds. “But we’ve got a great group here, so it won’t take long to get back into the swing. I just want to get back out there and battle and do what I can to help.”

The Blues will wear their gold reverse retro jerseys for the final time Tuesday against Buffalo.

In Monday’s drills, the Blues used the following lines:

• Brandon Saad-Robert Thomas-Jordan Kyrou

• Ivan Barbashev-Brayden Schenn-Vladimir Tarasenko

• Jake Neighbours-Noel Acciari-Logan Brown

• Alexey Toropchenko-Nathan Walker-Tyler Pitlick

• Josh Leivo was an extra

• Nick Leddy-Colton Parayko

• Niko Mikkola-Justin Faulk

• Torey Krug-Tyler Tucker

• Calle Rosen-Robert Bortuzzo

On the power play, Krug and Tarasenko joined Thomas, Schenn and Kyrou on one unit while Faulk, Barbashev, Saad, Neighbours and Brown were on another.

Injured defenseman Marco Scandella (hip) skated on his own before practice while Scott Perunovich (shoulder) took the ice after the team’s regular workout. Center Ryan O’Reilly (foot) is not yet able to practice.

The Buffalo Sabres carried a record of 23-19-3 into a Monday game in Dallas against the Stars. That was the first of four consecutive road games for the Sabres, who entered the week having gone 9-2-1 over their last 12 road contests.

Going into Monday’s game, Buffalo was led offensively by former Blues prospect Tage Thompson, a first-round draft pick in 2016 who was a key part of the trade that brought Ryan O’Reilly here in the summer of 2018. Thompson, 25, entered the week as the league’s seventh-leading scorer (61 points, on 32 goals and 29 assists). That includes 14 goals on the power play, one shorthanded and five game winners.

Other top scorers for Buffalo included defenseman Rasmus Dahlin (13G, 39A), Alex Tuch (22G, 28A), Jeff Skinner (19G, 26A) and Dylan Cozens (16G, 26A). In goal, the Sabres have used three goaltenders this season — Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen (12-5-1, 3.31 goals-against, .899 save percentage). Craig Anderson (7-6-2, 2.78, .917) and Eric Comrie (4-8, 3.67, .883).

With 172 goals this season, Buffalo trailed only Edmonton (178) and Boston (177) in NHL goals scored this season.

In their only other meeting this season, on Nov. 23, Buffalo ended St. Louis’ seven-game win streak with a 6-2 home victory. The home team broke open a 1-1 game with five straight goals, getting two each from Skinner and Jack Quinn. Luukkonen stopped 34 of 36 shots for the win.

“They score a lot of goals, they’ve got a lot of skill, they have a good, young team over there, trending in the right direction, so it’ll be a tough game.”
