Former Major League Baseball first overall pick Matt Bush was arrested again on Friday. This time it was on charges that he caused an accident while driving intoxicated.
Matt Bush was arrested by Arlington Police in Texas after they attempted to pull him over at around 8:25 PM because he was reportedly “driving erratically.”
According to TMZ, the 38-year-old Bush then fled from police and they lost sight of him.
He was arrested and charged with one count of DWI, one count of accident involving injury, and one count of evading.
Matt Bush was the first overall draft pick in the 2004 draft by the San Diego Padres, but he did not make his Major League debut until 12 years later in 2016.
He was drafted out of high school at the age of 18 and received a $3,150,000 signing bonus from the Padres.
Before he ever played a single game professionally, Matt Bush was suspended for being involved in a fight outside a bar. In that incident, he was arrested on suspicion of felony assault, misdemeanor trespass, disorderly conduct, and underage drinking.
After batting just .219 with a .276 slugging percentage in 322 minor league games, Bush was converted to a pitcher in 2007.
In 2009, after being designated for assignment by San Diego, Bush was arrested for allegedly being intoxicated in a parking lot and assaulting two high school freshman lacrosse players with a golf club.
The next year he was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays, but before that season began he was released after a report surfaced that he had thrown a baseball at a woman’s head at a party while in Dunedin, Florida for Spring Training.
In 2012, after signing with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2010, Matt Bush was again released, this time for driving while intoxicated over a 72-year-old man’s head during Spring Training. He was arrested and charged with two counts of DUI with property damage, one count of DUI with serious bodily injury, one count of leaving the scene of an accident with an injury, one count of driving with a suspended license, and two counts of leaving the scene of an accident with damage to property.
He would end up spending 34 months in prison after his third DUI conviction in 10 years.
The Texas Rangers signed Bush upon his release from prison in 2015. His father moved in with him and traveled to his games. He was was called up to the major leagues by the Rangers in May 2016.
From 2016 to 2023, Matt Bush would compile a 3.75 ERA in 217 games for the Rangers and Milwaukee Brewers before leaving baseball for good after earning almost $8 million.
