While Lake Tahoe is no stranger to luxury living, so few properties, even at the highest level, have everything your heart desires. Sierra Sunset Estate, offered by Tahoe Luxury Properties, is the rare home that does.
The simple fact of its setting offers a unique opportunity to experience the lake all to yourself, with 24 acres and, count ‘em, 50 glorious yards of pristine shoreline, complete with a private pier and outdoor spaces outfitted for full-throttle entertaining.
Grill for barbecuing? Check. Gas firepit? Check. Hot tub? Yes, indeed, a Michael Phelps Legend series eight-seater with views for miles. Want to paddleboard or kayak? The equipment is in the boathouse.
The house is worthy of its location. Sierra Sunset Estate is a classic Lake Tahoe home, designed not in the boxy, angular, minimalist trend of late but rather aimed at mountain living (in all seasons) in plush comfort.
Let’s start with the gourmet kitchen with butler’s pantry. The massive space overlooking the lake has a dine-in table that seats up to 10 (in addition to the more formal dining room adjacent that also seats 10), and there’s space to work if multiple chefs are working together — and a butler’s pantry for prepping coffee tea and coffee (with your choice of three different coffee systems) that connects the two dining areas. The commercial kitchen is also user-friendly, with drawers filled with every conceivable tool and gadget, as well as tableware for both indoor and outdoor use.
Just behind the kitchen is a cool, dark 3,500-bottle wine room that’s perfect for safely letting older vintages rest until it’s party time, and there’s round table inside for decanting bottles or playing a card game with a nightcap.
The two living rooms are studies in contrast: The more formal area as you enter the home is for entertaining, complete with a self-playing grand piano and a magnificent fireplace that’s as tall as many humans. The area on the other side of the kitchen is more of a family hangout-TV-watching space (with a Sonos sound system) with comfy leather couches and chairs that invite kicking off your shoes.
Down the hall at the end of the long, wide corridor is a bar and game room that runs the entire width of the house. You’re going to want to bring your mixologist on this trip, not to mention freshen up on your pool table etiquette. This is a space you could spend most of your time in, especially given the changing light throughout the day.
My own family had other plans. Our magnet was the theater room, followed by the gym. The former is a marvel worthy of a Los Angeles film executive — it seats 17 and the projector connects to any media apps you’re subscribed to, making it simple to watch feature-length films, sports and TV shows on the big screen. (Yes, the chairs recline, and they have cup holders.) The gym is at the opposite end of the house and has everything you need for a full-body workout (no excuses) with peaceful views of the Aspen trees lining the entrance to the property. Oh, and both a steam shower and sauna.
There are nine bedrooms (and 9.5 baths) in the main house, one downstairs and eight upstairs, and five of these are king suites. (Not enough room? Then check out the guest house that comes with the rental, which has two additional bedrooms, a bathroom, and a full kitchen and living room.) There’s also two laundry rooms, should you need them, and nine fireplaces in total, including the aforementioned one.
Despite its feeling of peaceful remoteness, Sierra Sunset Estate is a 10-minute drive from Edgewood Tahoe, home of the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship that hosts the world’s greatest golfers each year. And it’s also a stone’s throw from Stateline gaming, world-class skiing at Heavenly, and any kind of restaurant you might be looking for.
The icing on this already-delicious cake is the services and amenities at your fingertips through Tahoe Luxury Properties, the agency through which this home is rented. The company’s growing concierge services include booking anything you need to make your stay complete — private chefs, grocery delivery, in-home spa services, boat rentals, captained charters. It’s even possible to leave the planning entirely in their trustworthy hands for a turnkey vacation experience.
Sierra Sunset Estate is such an appealing spot in all the ways enumerated above, but then there are the ineffable details that make it a once-in-a-lifetime experience: the way the chandeliers catch the light, leaving gorgeous prisms for you to discover; the surprising birds that come to say hello; the serenity of the rustling Aspen leaves; the ability to walk out the back door and into the unpopulated lake.
Sierra Sunset Estate can comfortably accommodate 20 guests, so it’s perfect for gathering with extended family or ensuring utter privacy for a smaller group traveling with staff. Price range is $20,000-$30,000 per night.
