A 25-year-old convict with a history of burglary and kidnapping offences was arrested for trespassing at Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago home.
Joshua Warnock insisted he just wanted to speak to the former US president after he was caught entering the property twice and confronted by Secret Service agents.
Lawyers acting on Warnock's behalf said there were concerns surrounding his mental health following the attempted break-in on January 8.
Trump is believed to have been home at the time of the incident, according to WFLX.
Warnock has a colorful criminal record which includes a breaking and entering and burglary offence in 2016.
On New Year's Eve 2019 he was arrested again for attempted burglary of an unoccupied conveyance, false imprisonment, tampering with a witness and battery.
He was jailed the following February before being released just over a year later in March 2021.
According to his record, he has also been arrested for driving without a valid license and possession of drug paraphernalia and battery.
US Secret Service agents caught Warnock trespassing on the Mar-a-Lago property at around midday on January 8 and issued him with a written warning which stated he would be arrested if he returned.
However he was spotted again on the estate at around 6pm when officers swooped in on him.
An incident report from Palm Beach Police Department reads: 'On January 8, 2023, at approximately 18.04 hours, officers were dispatched to Mar-a-Lago in reference to Joshua Warnock returning and entering the property.'
A federal criminal complaint states that the trespasser insisted he needed to speak to Trump, who lives at the 17-acre Palm Beach estate with his wife and family, claims WFLX.
Warnock later admitted to officers he 'climbed up a big step' to get to the front yard and made his way toward the pool.
Agents determined that Warnock was able to jump over a concrete ledge dividing Mar-a-Lago from a public area along Southern Boulevard.
He was transported to the Palm Beach Police Department and is facing a federal charge of knowingly entering or remaining in a restricted building or ground.
He is being held without bond at Palm Beach County Jail.
On January 25 he appeared in court over the incident and a hearing has been set for Wednesday February 1.
A motion from his lawyer states there are 'concerns' about Warnock's mental health and the State Judge recently asked him to undergo competency exams.
They have asked for a 'few extra days' to speak to Warnock's family and consult with an expert regarding bond conditions, mental health and potential competency issues.
The motion added extra time would be needed to secure housing for the defendant pending the outcome of his case.
Warnock, who posts frequently on his social media profiles, had appeared to turn over a new leaf since his release from jail in 2021.
'I have been home for two months now and so far I think I have been doing alright for myself,' he wrote on Facebook.
'I have me a great job I actually enjoy going to every morning.
'I have saved a little money and have paid to finally get my license back'
The post continued: 'Hopefully within the next few years I will be full time working for myself.
'Last but not least I am very happy I am gaining a relationship with my family and spending a little time with them again.'
He also shared a poem about life in jail which spoke of being left 'utterly alone' and lying 'awake at night, shedding endless tears.'
His motive for targeting Trump's estate is not known.
The former President has been holed up in his Mar-a-Lago estate since his reluctant departure from the White House in early 2021.
It features a 20,000 square-foot ballroom which has been refurbished to serve as an office. His lifestyle there reportedly involves playing 18 holes of golf a day.
The estate has recently been featured heavily in media headlines after it was raided by the FBI to uncover classified documents.
It is not the first time the estate has been targeted by trespassers. Back in November Secret Service agents found a male trespasser at the Florida resort who refused to leave the property.
At the time police described it as a 'routine trespass complaint'. It wasn’t made clear why the unidentified man refused to leave. Agents conducted a search of the property in the wake of the incident.
