The AT&T Byron Nelson was cancelled due to the pandemic last year, but returns to the 50-tournament PGA Tour season beginning Thursday. The 2021 AT&T Byron Nelson is moving to TPC Craig Ranch, a 7,468-yard, par-72 layout designed by Tom Weiskopf, after two years at Trinity Forest. Sung Kang captured the 2019 event for his first career PGA Tour victory, and is back this week to defend his title against a world-class field that includes Jordan Spieth, Masters champ Hideki Matsuyama and Jon Rahm.
Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau are tied at 8-1 atop the 2021 AT&T Byron Nelson odds from William Hill Sportsbook. Spieth is 10-1, with Matsuyama at 20-1 and Kang much further down the PGA odds board at 300-1. One major surprise the model is calling for at the AT&T Byron Nelson 2021: Bryson DeChambeau, an eight-time PGA Tour champion and one of the Vegas co-favorites, stumbles and doesn't even crack the top five. The 27-year-old is coming off a strong showing at the Wells Fargo Championship last week, securing his sixth top-10 finish of the season. He's recorded two victories on the PGA Tour this season, but he's been inconsistent in recent weeks, finishing outside the top-40 in two of his last three starts.
DeChambeau's inconsistent performances can be directly attributed to his driving accuracy percentage. In fact, DeChambeau enters this week's event ranked 166th on the PGA Tour in driving accuracy percentage (55.22), which doesn't bode well for his chances to finish on top of the leaderboard at TPC Craig Ranch. He's not a strong pick to win it all and there are far better values in the AT&T Byron Nelson 2021 field.
Another surprise: Scottie Scheffler, a 25-1 long shot, makes a strong run at the title. Scheffler has a much better chance to win it all than his odds imply, so he's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. The 28th-ranked player in the world, Scheffler has put together a solid season so far and is primed to visit the winner's circle.
Scheffler finished seventh at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, then was fifth at the WGC-Workday Championship at The Concession en route to earning over $2.7 million so far in the 2020-21 PGA Tour season. Scheffler is 32nd on tour with a 305.2 average driving distance, and is 15th overall in strokes gained: off the tee. Those two stats will be pivotal this week at TPC Craig Ranch, and makes Scheffler a strong value pick in 2021 AT&T Byron Nelson bets.
