The fact the college football season is a little more than two months away and there is still a handful of quarterbacks with starting experience in the portal should not come as a surprise.
After all, entering the portal is a popular thing to do and it has become a rather busy gathering place.
That said, injuries happen during the summer and any given team’s depth chart may need a boost. With that in mind, perhaps one or more of the seven quarterbacks listed below (alphabetically) will find a new home prior to the start of the season.
They are not the only signal callers remaining in a portal that has plenty of them. They are, however, the most experienced and each has also been with two FBS programs.
Barrett, who is seeking a fourth team, began his career at Auburn where he redshirted as a freshman in 2016. The Orlando native played at a JUCO in 2017 before transferring to Kent State. Barrett totaled 2,828 yards and 18 touchdowns as the Golden Flashes’ starter in 2018 before losing the job to Dustin Crum in 2019. He did not play last year and has one year of eligibility.
Bowers was a two-year starter at Northern Illinois, including starting all six games for the winless Huskies last season. He threw for 1,365 yards, 10 touchdowns and only two interceptions in 212 attempts after a 2,130/7/8 showing in an injury-riddled 2019 following his arrival from Cal. The Washington native began his career in Berkeley in 2015 and took the field once (no pass attempts) in his first two seasons before throwing for 3,039 yards and 18 TDs as the Golden Bears’ starter in 2017. After starting the 2018 season opener, coach Justin Wilcox made an in-game switch to Chase Garbers and Bowers did not play the rest of that season. He has one year of eligibility.
Howard began his career at Southern Miss where he started nine games and totaled 11 touchdowns in two seasons (2016-17). After sitting out 2018 as a transfer, Howard played in eight games over two seasons with Tulane. He was the Green Wave’s starting quarterback the first two games last year before losing his job to Michael Pratt. Howard’s career numbers include 2,542 total yards (2,086 passing) and 16 total touchdowns.
Kendall closed out his time with the Mountaineers in style. Summoned to start the second half of last year’s Liberty Bowl against Army, he responded by throwing for 121 yards and a pair of touchdowns in a come-from-behind victory. The North Carolina native, who started his career at Oklahoma (39 pass attempts) where he was behind Heisman winners Kyler Murray and Baker Mayfield, transferred to WVU following the 2018 season. He was then-coach Dana Holgorsen’s starter in 2019 (1,989 yards, 12 TDs) before losing his job to Jarret Doege under new coach Neal Brown last season. Kendall has one year of eligibility.
Modster attempted only one pass for Cal last season after starting three games for the Golden Bears in 2019, when he totaled 873 yards. He arrived at Cal from UCLA in December 2018, which made for a busy quarterback room and prompted the aforementioned Bowers to depart Berkeley for Northern Illinois a week later. Modster, who has one year of eligibility, is a SoCal native who played five games as a redshirt freshman at UCLA in 2017 before transferring to a JUCO (did not play) early in the 2018 season.
Pigrome, who has one year of eligibility, started 10 0f 12 games for Western Kentucky last season after transferring from Maryland. He totaled 1,940 yards (1,615 passing) and 13 touchdowns in an offense that struggled all season and ranked 120th out of 127 FBS teams. However, he threw only two interceptions in 297 attempts. The Alabama native made seven starts in four years at Maryland with his sophomore season (2017) upended by a torn ACL in the opener. Pigrome totaled 2,407 yards and 26 touchdowns with the Terrapins.
Shelley started Utah State’s first four games last season (420 yards, 2/2) before being dismissed from the program by interim coach Frank Maile, who took over for the fired Gary Anderson a week earlier. The Texan transferred to USU, where his grandfather played in the 1970s, after three seasons at Utah. He started five games for the Utes as a redshirt freshman in 2018 after starter Tyler Huntley was injured, and resumed backup duties in 2019. Shelley, who has two seasons of eligibility, has 1,625 career passing yards and 12 total TDs.
