One day after the San Francisco 49ers pulled off a blockbuster trade for the No. 3 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, general manager John Lynch and Co. were busy making lesser moves.
That includes bringing back veteran receiver Mohamed Sanu after a short stint with the team last season. San Francisco also signed reserve linebacker Nathan Gerry. Both come in on one-year deals, which will likely be at the veteran minimum.
Sanus agent, Mike McCartney of Priority Sports, made the announcement earlier on Saturday by indicating that his client had signed a one-year deal with San Francisco.
Sanu, 31, played just three games with the 49ers early last season before being released. He caught a mere one pass during that span. The nine-year veteran then latched on with the Detroit Lions, catching 16-of-23 targets for 178 yards and a touchdown in seven games.
A third-round pick of the Cincinnati Bengals back in 2012, Sanu was excellent in stints in both Ohio and Atlanta from 2014-17 catching 281 passes for 3,378 yards with 18 touchdowns while hauling in 67% of his targets.
Unfortunately, hes hit a dead end in his career recently. With that said, familiarity in Kyle Shanahans offense dating back to their days together with the Falcons could help Sanu.
Right now, the 49ers dont have a legit slot receiver behind the likes of Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk on the outside.
Trent Taylor is a free agent and remains unlikely to return after a horrible 2020 campaign. Former third-round pick Jalen Hurd has missed each of his first two seasons to injury.
Meanwhile, former late-round pick Richie James caught 23 passes for 394 yards in 11 games last season. Hed be the 49ers starting slot guy if the season started right now. Thats not a whole lot within the confines of a Shanahan offense that relies on the slot.
Its in this that the signing of Sanu likely does very little when it comes to the 49ers plans for next months draft. Despite trading up from the 12th pick to No. 3 overall, San Francisco did not give up either its second or third-round pick. One of those selections could very well be used on a slot receiver.
Fans in San Francisco have to be hoping the 26-year-old Gerry doesnt somehow find himself on the field a whole lot in 2021.
The former Nebraska standout signed a one-year contract with the 49ers after struggling big time with the Philadelphia Eagles a season ago. In fact, Gerry yielded a 158.3 passer rating when targeted and was among the worst at his position in coverage around the NFL.
Lynch and Co. have to be hoping that Gerry returns to 2019 form. While he wasnt great by any stretch of the imagination, the former fifth-round pick did record 78 tackles, 2.5 sacks and two interceptions while ranking 28th among qualified linebackers in passer rating allowed when targeted.
This is pretty much a depth move behind Azeez Al-Shaair, who took over starting duties with the 49ers a season ago. Realistically, this defense doesnt have a WILL linebacker on the field on base downs. Instead, the 49ers go with Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw in sub packages with an extra defensive back. That makes depth behind Al-Shaair less important. It also means Gerrys value will come more on special teams.
The 49ers continued to build depth along the interior of their defensive line this past week after re-signing D.J. Jones. That included bringing in underrated veteran Zach Kerr on a one-year contract from the Carolina Panthers. Kerr, 30, graded out as the 10th-best defensive tackle in the NFL last season, per Pro Football Focus metrics. He was also 25th overall in pass-rush productivity.
The addition of Kerr might be needed following an off-field incident surrounding fellow defensive tackle Kevin Givens. The reserve lineman allegedly attacked a man at a Baltimore-area hotel back in February and is facing second-degree assault charges.
"The San Francisco 49ers organization is aware of the media report regarding Kevin Givens, the 49ers said in a statement on Friday. We are gathering the relevant facts of this matter and will continue to monitor the situation."
Even after retaining Jaquiski Tartt and adding fellow veteran Tavon Wilson to the mix, the 49ers apparently arent done looking for upgrades at safety.
NFL insider Josina Anderson reported on Friday that free agent safety Tony Jefferson is slated to take a visit with the 49ers in the next couple weeks.
Jefferson, 29, sat out a season ago. Prior to that, he was among the most unheralded safeties in the NFL during his time with the Arizona Cardinals and Baltimore Ravens. Back in 2016 with the Cardinals, Jefferson recorded a whopping 13 tackles for loss from the strong safety position. If the 49ers were to bring him in, hed compete with Tartt and Marcell Harris for the starting job.
On Friday, star 49ers tight end George Kittle reacted to the blockbuster trade that sent San Francisco the third pick in next months NFL Draft. He didnt necessarily give it a glowing review. Though, Kittle also didnt let his opinion known.
Thats one of the major backdrops to the mega deal. It sure looks like the 49ers will move off Jimmy Garoppolo after three-plus seasons with the team.
Despite his injury issues, Garoppolo is 14 months removed from leading the 49ers to a surprising Super Bowl appearance. He seems to be a favorite in the locker room and helped turn Kittle into the games top tight end.
It will be interesting to see what the reactions are behind the scenes if the 49ers do in fact move on from Garoppolo here soon.
