Louisiana Tech linebacker Brevin Randle is likely to be suspended after stomping on an opponent’s head during a game against UTEP on Friday night. He did so deliberately.
The Bulldogs traveled to El Paso for the Conference USA college football matchup and jumped out to an early 14-0 lead in the first quarter. It was a 17-7 game as it went to the half.
Randle’s incident occurred during the second quarter.
Miners offensive lineman Steven Hubbard was laying on the ground away from the pile after flying in out of nowhere to lay a block on Randle. The official had already blown the loose ball play dead at this point.
In that moment, Randle came in from his blind side and laid an initial late hit.
As he stood back to his feet, he turned back and used his right foot to stomp directly on Hubbard’s head.
Officials, who were looking to see which team had possession in the scrum, completely missed the extra-curricular activities. They did not throw a flag. Brevin Randle went — wrongfully — unpenalized.
The first hit was after the whistle and deserved a late hit penalty. The stomp absolutely could have and should have warranted an ejection.
And yet, nothing. No call.
They missed it. Never saw it. Never happened.
It certainly looked intentional. Randle may claim that it was not. The jury will come out.
Either way, it doesn’t bode well for Randle. There is a pretty clear willful intent with that stomp. He really drives his leg down into Hubbard’s helmet.
If UTEP does not get out ahead of the suspension, expect Conference USA to step in and issue punishment. Randle needs to sit for a game or three. Thinking about his actions will serve him well.
We don’t need players stomping on the heads of other players. I think we all, even Randle, can agree on that.
