Jude Bellingham's dazzling second half display against San Marino left a gobsmacked Roy Keane labeling him a complete midfielder.
The 17-year-old was thrown into the action at half-time by Gareth Southgate as a replacement for Mason Mount, and wasted little time in imposing himself in the centre of the park.
Bellingham's delicate touches and confident runs helped the hosts stay on the front foot and an acrobatic effort which sailed narrowly wide would have seen the former Birmingham man become the youngest ever scorer for the international side.
United rolled out the red carpet in trying to sign Bellingham, even having Sir Alex Ferguson meet him at the training ground but he opted for Dortmund to gain more playing time.
Waxing lyrical in the aftermath, Keane said: 'Bellingham looks like a complete midfielder. He's still a kid playing regularly in Germany.
'He'll be disappointed with missing the chance, but at 17 he has nice composure, happy to break forward, very good night's work.
'He will be disappointed with the chance, he tries to complicate it when he should just side-foot it.'
Keane is known throughout all of football as a tough talking, old school consumer of the game who is rarely impressed.
Yet his thoughts were quickly agreed upon by fellow pundits Ian Wright and Eni Aluko, who enthused about Bellingham's abilities despite his tender years.
Wright noted: 'Some players want to move it quickly and he has a nice calmness to him, and we're going to need it.'
While Aluko added: 'You wouldn't think he's 17. He's very articulate, he's only a kid, he shows a level of comfort playing for Dortmund week in week out rather than playing on the bench for a big club.'
Bellingham will be hoping for his third England cap when Southgate's side travel to Albania on Sunday, looking to build upon their early winning momentum.
A fixture against Poland is to follow on March 31, before clashes with Austria and Romania in early June.
