Daley Blind suffered what looked like an horrific injury and had to be carried off on a stretcher in Holland's emphatic win in Gibraltar.
The Ajax defender was forced off in the second half after slipping and landing heavily on his ankle while his knee appeared to be in an awkward position.
Blind stayed down for some time and was seen wincing in pain before the physios came on and signalled for a stretcher.
The injury to Blind somewhat overshadowed Holland's 7-0 victory, which came courtesy of goals from Steven Berghuis, Luuk de Jong, Georginio Wijnaldum, Donyell Malen, Donny van de Beek and a double from Memphis Depay.
The victory was Holland's biggest on the road since defeating San Marino back in 1993, but the immediate concerns were with Blind after the match.
Holland boss Frank de Boer however allayed fears over the severity of Blind's injury by revealing he didn't have to go to hospital despite being in clear agony.
'Daley Blind? It looked serious. But it's his ankle, not his knee. He did not have to leave for the hospital,' he said after their drubbing of Gibraltar.
Fans were left fearing the worst after seeing pictures of Blind's awkward fall.
Holland legend Raphael van de Vaart even said: 'Anyone who has played football knows there is something very wrong with how his knee was when he fell over.'
One fan wrote on social: 'Nooo, you can't be serious! This is looking so bad.'
Another said: 'Praying for Blind,' while a third user added: 'Wishing Daley Blind a speedy recovery. Looks like a horrific injury, that.'
The 31-year-old defender, who plays his club football in Holland with Ajax, was making his 77th appearance for his country on Tuesday evening.
Blind is a regular in defence for Holland and started in the 4-2 defeat against Turkey and 2-0 victory over Latvia in their first two World Cup qualifiers last week.
