Euro 2020: Graeme Souness insists 'football AIN'T coming home' after England's goalless draw

Graeme Souness slammed England's performance against Scotland and insisted Gareth Southgate's side won't be winning Euro 2020 after the goalless draw at Wembley.

Optimism had been high amongst English fans after a professional win over Croatia to kick off the campaign, but the team struggled for much of the match against a Scotland side that were much improved from their defeat to the Czech Republic.

Both sides had big opportunities to win but Souness was in no doubt as to who he felt had the better of the match, and he stuck the boot into Southgate's side.

'Football ain't coming home with that team,' he told ITV Sport.

'At this level you need more football in the team. Scotland looked like a proper team but without that cutting edge.

'The players to a man were fabulous. I don't accept England didn't start right, Scotland were really good.

'England looked a disjointed outfit tonight, there was no cohesion, no purpose in their passing. I come back to Phillips and Rice that for me doesn't work. They're two peas out of the same pod.'

Steve Clarke's side earned widespread praise for the intensity and physicality they brought to proceedings, starting in the opening seconds when Lyndon Dykes left his mark on Luke Shaw.

But Souness insisted Scotland deserved credit for more than just their combative nature and were well worth the point they came away from Wembley with.

'It wasn't just about battling - they played football, composed, came here after a performance result low on confidence and played with a bit of style and polish,' Souness said.

'I was worried in the second half after their first-half efforts and thought it might dip but they stuck with it and it's a great point for them.

'They weren't lucky, they thoroughly deserved that.'
