Darren Moore's heroic return and a spirited draw was not enough to spare Sheffield Wednesday from another plunge into League One and complete a depressing season for the Steel City.

The Owls finished rock-bottom of the Championship, going down along with neighbours Rotherham, and with Sheffield United already doomed to drop out of the Premier League.

It is the first time both Sheffield clubs have been relegated in the same season and Wednesday face what could prove a pivotal summer with 13 players out of contract.

'We have to look at the situation,' said Moore, who was back after post-Covid pneumonia. 'The squad, the group, there's a large amount of players out of contract. They'll all be spoken to once we've had meetings as staff.'

Wednesday ended the season three points behind Derby and, ultimately, are relegated by virtue of the six points deducted for the financial irregularities relating to the sale of the Hillsborough stadium to the club's owner Dejphon Chansiri.

It has put them under pressure since the first game and they were already deep in trouble before Moore, the third different permanent manager of the season, was appointed in March.

'All I've thought about is staying in the Championship,' said Moore. 'Tomorrow I'll have a different head on me. Despite what's happened we've taken it to the last minutes of the season.

'We wish Derby well. Congratulations to them. We are on our own road getting this club back to where we feel it should be. For us as a football club, it's about sticking together.'
