Alex Hales remains under consideration for this year’s World Cup despite turning down a chance to return to England’s one-day squad in Bangladesh.

Nottinghamshire batsman Hales was asked to end a four-year absence from 50-over cricket on both this trip and the tour of South Africa that preceded it but declined the offers to honour Twenty20 franchise commitments at the ILT20 and Pakistan Super League.

‘We certainly spoke to him about it, particularly when he had such a good Twenty20 World Cup, and that door is still open,’ said England coach Matthew Mott.

‘When we sit down to pick that squad for the World Cup, we won’t hold a grudge against anyone who’s not taken this opportunity. It’s an invitation to play and we totally understand if there are other factors at play.

‘Anyone who’s playing white-ball cricket well, is in form at the right time, and is someone we think can be good in subcontinental conditions will be in the mix.’

Hales, 34, was axed ahead of the 2019 World Cup and spent until last September in exile, with previous captain Eoin Morgan regularly saying he had broken the team’s trust. 

But he has been successful at the top of the order in England’s T20 team since returning, and finished as second top scorer behind Jos Buttler in becoming world champions in Australia three months ago.

Of those on this tour, uncapped duo Will Jacks and Rehan Ahmed missed training at Mirpur on Sunday, feeling the effects of a flight from New Zealand and a stomach bug respectively.

Opponents Bangladesh, meanwhile, are far from a happy camp despite an excellent ODI record on home soil - they have not lost a bilateral series since a Buttler-led England triumphed 2-1 in 2016.

Captain Tamim Iqbal was forced to field a raft of questions about his strained relationship with predecessor Shakib Al Hasan, who remains away in the USA on a family matter and will potentially miss Wednesday’s opening match of three.

While acknowledging the dressing room rift, Tamim said it would not affect their work together on the field and each of them would always put the team first.
