Aussie cricket legend tips off-spinner Todd Murphy for a long Test career following impressive debut

Victorian coach Chris Rogers is resigned to not seeing off-spinner Todd Murphy playing for his state very often after his stunning Test debut in India and a multi-format international career potentially ahead of him.

The 22-year-old's haul of 7-124 in the opening Test in Nagpur was enough to confirm him not only as Nathan Lyon's heir apparent, but he's also sure to be a limited overs option for Australia given his white-ball output in both the Big Bash and for his state.

Murphy, who has only played five Sheffield Shield games for the Bushrangers having been behind first-choice spinner Jon Holland for much of the past three seasons, has been used primarily in one-day games by Rogers, racking up 14 appearances since his debut in the 2020-21 season.

Even this Shield season, despite taking 14 wickets in his three matches, Murphy missed selection in the opening game of the summer, with left-armer Holland instead preferred.

Calf injuries to Holland opened the door, and Murphy stormed through to put his name on the national selection radar before taking down some 'excellent batters' - including Indian star Virat Kohli in Nagpur - to cement an international future.

'I don't think anyone was imagining that. We all hoped he'd (Rogers) get two or three (wickets) and just contribute and just control the scoreboard as well,' Rogers said on Tuesday.

'But to go and get seven-for, and it wasn't just the fact he got seven, he got excellent batters out and he did control the scoreboard. He got a little bit of tap at the end, but apart from that, he was just outstanding.

'That bodes well for the rest of his career. I'm not sure how much we'll see of him in future years at Victoria, but that means we are doing well and he is doing well.'

Rogers said Murphy's rise didn't surprise many at Victoria, having seen his development up close, how hard he worked and how much he sought out others to get better.

'Nothing has fazed him too much so far in his career,' Rogers told SEN.

'He knows this is a tough craft to master but with that he goes and seeks learnings around that.

'He's done everything right and he was set up to be successful in his first Test. I'm sure he didn't imagine it would go like that, but it's amazing to see.'

While Murphy may not play for Victoria for some time, all-rounder Glenn Maxwell looms as a likely inclusion for the next Shield game starting next Monday against South Australia.

Maxwell has not played since breaking his leg last November.

Will Pucovski's return also remains unknown. The opening batsman won't be picked for the Shield team until he's played at least one second XI game for Victoria, and that might not be until March.
