ATTLEBORO — In a midseason loss at Walpole, the Bishop Feehan girls basketball team did not shoot well, but more specifically settled for poor attempts.
Feehan coach Amy Dolores then put in motion a plan to clean that up.
In Tuesday night’s game with rival St. Mary’s, the Shamrocks looked how Dolores wanted on offense — and pretty tough on defense, too — as they earned a 58-51 victory to improve to 16-2.
With the defeat, St. Mary’s falls to 16-2. Both teams are considered favorites to make deep state tournament runs, Feehan in Division 1, St. Mary’s in D3.
“We’ve just been working on getting great shots, and the kids have really bought into that,” Dolores said. “Because of that, we didn’t have to settle for long jumpers, and we were able to get great looks in the paint. It was really predicated on their unselfishness.”
The scoring mainly came from four players. Sophomore Charlotte Adams-Lopez was brilliant throughout, scoring her team’s first seven points and finishing with 20. Fellow sophomore Madelyn Steel had 11 points. Junior Julia Webster scored 12, and senior Samantha Reale had eight.
Of those 58 points, only six came on 3-pointers. The motion, cutting, and ball movement resulted in clean looks inside the paint, and the Shamrocks made their fair share of contested ones, as well.
“We focused a lot after that (Walpole) game on reversing the ball, a lot of ball movement, and not looking for early shots,” Adams-Lopez said. “Taking our time, using up the shot clock, anything we can to get better looks.”
The Shamrocks led, 11-9, after the first quarter, but dominated the second to the tune of 18-7. An early 14-2 run saw Feehan score 10 points on layups or shots in close. Steel punctuated the run with a 3-pointer that made it 25-11.
St. Mary’s made some runs in the second half, but Feehan continually fought the Spartans off. Adams-Lopez scored five points in the third quarter, including a nifty reverse layup in front of a hyped-up Feehan student section.
The win offered a measure of revenge for Feehan, which lost to St. Mary’s earlier in the season. Both teams play in the Catholic Central Large, but only the first game counted as such, as this was a non-league game.
Dolores was pleased with how her super sophs played with the state tournament just around the corner.
“It’s huge. It’s huge,” Dolores said. “We have a lot of sophomores playing big roles, and for them to have that experience . . . Some of our seniors and juniors have experience having big wins. It was really nice for the sophomores to have such a big role in this . . . going into the tournament.”
