The 20-year-old woman who was rescued from under an MBTA Green Line train at the BU Central stop Friday night needs a prosthetic, according to her friends who are raising money following the “horrific accident.”
Ava Harlow, of Amesbury, has been identified as the young woman who was stuck under the Green Line trolley and suffered serious injuries in the incident. Boston firefighters performed a tech rescue from under the train to free her.
Harlow is expected to survive, but is facing a very long road to recovery.
“This weekend Ava was in a horrific accident at the Green Line in Boston,” her friends from Amesbury High School wrote on a GoFundMe page for Harlow and her family. “Among her many injuries, she now needs a prosthetic.
“We are asking for donations to help pay for her multiple surgeries and her stay at the hospital during this very difficult time,” Harlow’s friends added.
The incident is under investigation by MBTA Transit Police detectives, according to the police agency. The accident happened at around 11:40 p.m. Friday at the BU Central stop, which is above ground on the B branch, along Commonwealth Avenue in the middle of Boston University’s campus.
After the Boston firefighters were able to safely free Harlow following a lengthy extrication, Boston EMS transported her to the hospital.
“This incident does not appear to be the result of any mechanical or MBTA employee failure,” MBTA Transit Police said in a statement.
The MBTA on Twitter described the incident Friday night as a “medical emergency.”
Harlow played field hockey and basketball during her time at Amesbury High School.
“Ava always made everyone laugh every day at school and is a great friend that has anyone’s back,” her friends wrote.
“Her parents, Jamie and Andrew, have to watch their only daughter go through this and we want to help make this awful situation a little better in any way possible,” they later added. “Any amount is greatly appreciated. We love you Ava and are praying for you.”
The GoFundMe page is called, “Please donate to help Ava and her family!”
As of 7 p.m. on Monday, about 8 hours after the page was created, more than $12,000 had been raised for Harlow and her family. The fundraiser’s goal is $150,000.
