Thunder Add First Round Pick In Al Horford Swap Of Kemba Walker To Relive Boston Financially

Oklahoma City Thunder General Manager Sam Presti wasted no time in making the first big splash of the offseason. Although the NBA Playoffs are still underway and the draft hasn’t yet occurred, he made a blockbuster move that would send Al Horford back to Boston.

As first reported by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Thunder are trading Al Horford, Moses Brown and a 2023 second-round pick to the Celtics for Kemba Walker, the No. 16 overall pick in the 2021 draft and a 2025 second-round draft pick.

An Al Horford trade was bound to happen, we just didn’t know it would be this early. Back in March, Presti and Horford came to a mutual agreement that he would sit out the final 28 games of the Thunder’s season. Presti pledged to work with Horford and his agent, Jason Glushon, on finding a trade to a team that fits better with this late stage of his career.

Horford completely understood the situation and knew this was likely part of the plan when being acquired by Oklahoma City.

“When I arrived, I understood the direction of the team, we had a great individual plan in place for me,” said Horford in March. “I feel like as a result I’ve played really good basketball for the Thunder.”

Financially, this will help the Celtics quite a bit as they were willing to part ways with a first round pick to make this deal happen. Boston will save roughly $20 million by swapping Walker’s contract for Horford’s. Furthermore, if Horford is waived by the 2022-23 season, only $14.5 million of the final year of his deal is guaranteed, meaning this trade could end up saving the Celtics $32 million.

For the Thunder, this is just another move in which Presti was able to compile another first round pick for their rebuild. They were already projected to have nearly the most cap space of any team in the NBA this offseason, so it won’t be a problem absorbing additional money now or down the road.

Walker is owed roughly $73.7 million over the next two seasons. However, he’s got a player option in 2022-23 season, so just the $36.0 million next season is guaranteed to be paid out.

This deal brings Oklahoma City to three first round and two early second round picks in July’s draft.
