Sneakers are not just for men anymore. Just take it from Ariana, Dresden, and Dakota Peters, three Boca Raton, Florida-bred sisters who own one of the largest sneaker collections in the world.
With a collection of rare and limited-release Jordans, Adidas, and Reebok kicks totaling over 6,000 — they've lost count at this point — the Peters sisters know they aren't the only women who harbor a passion for cool sneakers.
"I believe there are a ton of more people like us, girls like us," said 21-year-old Dakota Peters, one-third of the "The Chicks with Kicks," as the sisters are known on Instagram. "We love it. We're appreciative of it."
Until now, the collection has mostly been for personal enjoyment, with the occasional one-off sale of some rare pairs via their Instagram account, which has over 140,000 followers. But now, the women are auctioning off more than 2,200 rare pairs from their collection for the first time via an exclusive partnership with eBay. The total collection, which includes a variety of rare and coveted sneakers, is estimated to fetch about $1 million in total, according to eBay.
Some standout pairs up for auction include the Kanye Rebook collection, which is expected to go for $15,000, the Ray Gun SB collection, which is estimated to reach $18,000, and the Mark Smith 1/1 laser engraved for Sandy Bodecker, which is expected to hit $18,000.
While the Peters said they have been contacted by multiple auction houses to sell their collection in the past, they ultimately chose eBay for a variety of reasons. Ariana explained that it was important for the women to reach collectors beyond the reselling community, something they felt eBay offered as opposed to primarily sneaker resale sites like StockX and GOAT. eBay's sneaker authenticity guarantee, which officially launched in October, was also a benefit.
But there were sentimental reasons to partner with eBay as well.
"That's really where our collection started," said 27-year-old Ariana, who explained how their father initially started the sneaker collection 25 years ago from pairs he purchased on eBay. "It felt full circle and genuine and authentic."

Though the sneaker industry has a history of excluding women in hyped drops and at the designer and creator level, the buying power of female sneakerheads is becoming difficult for brands to ignore.
According to eBay, the women's sneaker category on the platform grew more than 80% over the past year, with sales of men's sneakers bought by women doubling in that same period.
"Women are one of the most passionate segments of the sneakerhead community," eBay North America's vice president of fashion Charis Márquez said in a press release. "And we will continue to celebrate them while also ensuring we're meeting the growing demand for more styles, sizes, and sellers for this audience."
On March 8, eBay launched an initiative for female sneakerheads and announced a collaboration with apparel brand Playa Society to sell merchandise to celebrate the female sneakerhead community. eBay's partnership with The Chicks with Kicks is another example of the platform's commitment to win over this subset of sneaker enthusiasts.

Though their father started the collection initially, The Chicks with Kicks brand was born eight years ago, when the now 25-year-old Dresden launched a corresponding Instagram page for the sisters to showcase their extensive collection. Since then, The Chicks with Kicks page has continued to grow.
"This was a hobby turned business," Ariana said of the collection, which is currently housed in the family's indoor basketball court. In addition to sneakers, the sisters also work full-time in real-estate development through a brokerage that they own.
When it comes to acquiring shoes, the sisters focus on buying already released rare pairs from different collectors and sources as opposed to trying to win out on current hyped drops, though they declined to give specific details on this process.
"That's like the secret sauce," said Dakota. "If we told you we'd have to kill you."
With their eBay auction currently underway, the sisters are just beginning to process having to part with some of their favorite kicks. As Ariana explained, "It hasn't really become real yet."
Still, the women said they aren't closed off to the idea of doing another sale in the future.
"I presume it's going to go very well with eBay," Ariana said. "And if we can stomach the idea of doing another one, I'm sure we would only work with them."
