Portland State hits ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ buzzer beater vs. Northern Arizona

The Portland State Vikings may have pulled off what may be the craziest buzzer-beater of the college basketball season.

During the visiting Vikings’ 88-87 win against host Northern Arizona Lumberjacks on Saturday, Portland State netted a game-winning shot with just .4 seconds on the clock. It’s also worth mentioning the play started from the other side of the court.

Following a back-and-forth battle between the two Big Sky division rivals, the Vikings were down by one when Portland State guard Hunter Woods chucked a pass inbound behind the baseline.

With the ball flying to the other side of the court, Vikings forward Isaiah Johnson jumped in the air, caught the pass, and hit the shot from 12 feet away from the basket. His teammates soon crowded him afterward and formed a dogpile on him.

After the game, Portland State head coach Jase Coburn praised his team for their buzzer-beating execution and even said they had practiced the play before.

“I knew Hunter could throw that pass and I knew Isaiah had great hands and could make the catch,” Coburn told reporters. “That is probably a once-in-a-lifetime thing, but I will have to come up with a new play now if it ever happens again.”
