Nuggets star Michael Porter Jr.'s brother is arrested for 'vehicular homicide'

The younger brother of Denver Nuggets star Michael Porter Jr. was arrested early Sunday in connection with a fatal two-car crash, according to police.

Coban Porter, a University of Denver basketball player, was arrested on suspicion of vehicular homicide and reckless driving, police spokesman Kurt Barnes told The Denver Post. The collision occurred at about 1:54am on Sunday. One driver died at the scene, Barnes said.

Michael Porter Jr. was not involved in the crash, according to the team. However, he was ruled out of Sunday's game against the Oklahoma City Thunder for personal reasons.

Barnes did not provide further details about Sunday's crash, and the victim remains unidentified, publicly. The crash occurred at the intersection of South University Boulevard and Buchtel Boulevard on the city's south side.

A DU spokesman issued a statement to the Denver Post: 'This is a tragic and heartbreaking situation, and our deepest sympathies are with those involved in the accident, their families, and friends. All the resources of our campus and broader community, including counseling services, are available to any DU community member in need of assistance 24/7.'

Coban Porter attended several prep schools in his native Missouri before enrolling at the University of Denver. He has been rehabbing a torn ACL in his knee this season after averaging 11.4 points a game as a freshman last year.

There are seven total Porter siblings, including Michael and Jontay, who had a brief stint with the Grizzlies last season.

Michael was among the top recruits in the country before enrolling at the University of Missouri, but battled back problems before turning pro in 2018. Ultimately he was drafted 14th overall by the Nuggets despite his back issues, but played only nine games last season due to a third back surgery.

Regardless, he signed a five-year, $172 million extension before aggravating his bad back.
