The University of New Mexico‘s basketball program has had a resurgence this season.
After struggling through some rough years with Craig Neal and Paul Weir at the helm, Richard Pitino has begun to turn the program around.
The Lobos were the last team in college basketball to lose a game this season and have been in the NCAA Tournament picture throughout the year.
However, they are going to need to make some big moves this offseason if they want to continue to be a tournament team in the future.
3 of the team’s key players, Jaelen House, Morris Udeze, and Josiah Allick, are all seniors.
Yesterday, they took a step toward ensuring they’d have talent to step up once they lose some of the stars of this year’s team.
According to On3 Sports’ Joe Tipton, the Lobos got a commitment from 4-star guard Tru Washington, who is the uncle of current Houston Rockets player TyTy Washington.
Tru Washington was one of the few remaining recruits in the top 100 who had yet to make a commitment with only 5 others still waiting to make their decision. He is a standout shooting guard from AZ Compass Prep.
TyTy Washington was a 5-star recruit from Compass Prep when he headed to college, where he played at Kentucky. He spent just a year with the Wildcats, but was able to make an impact for the program. He averaged 12.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 3.9 assists while earning 2nd team All-SEC honors and leading the Wildcats to a 2-seed in the NCAA Tournament.
The Houston Rockets selected him 29th overall in the NBA’s most recent draft.
The New Mexico Lobos will be hoping that Tru Washington can recreate his nephew’s success at the college level.
