OXFORD, Miss. â Somewhere between Missouri and Mississippi, DâMoi Hodge rediscovered his jump shot, Kobe Brownâs ankle healed and Isiaih Mosley leaned into his role as an elite scoring threat.
All three developments staked Mizzou to an early lead Tuesday at Ole Miss and helped the Tigers secure their first Southeastern Conference road victory, an 89-77 win at The Pavilion at Ole Miss, a place where theyâve historically struggled to close out games.
Not Tuesday.
Matching their season high with 16 3-pointers, the Tigers (15-5, 4-4 SEC) looked more like the team that cruised through the seasonâs early slate and ambushed Illinois and Kentucky. Three days after its worst 3-point shooting game of the season, Mizzou shot 16 of 30 from behind the arc, the most 3-pointers the Tigers have made in an SEC game since joining the conference in 2012-13.
Hodge led the Tigers with 24 points, while Mosley added 20 and Brown finished with 18.
Hodge, beginning the week on a grisly shooting funk, sank his first three 3-pointers before the first media timeout, while Brown returned from missing Saturdayâs loss to Alabama and powered the Tigers inside and out. They werenât alone in the shooting barrage. Making his first start of the season in place of injured guard Tre Gomillion, Mosley caught fire from deep early.
The Tigers finally busted loose from their team-wide shooting slump, making 9 of 15 3s in the first half. Mizzou had shot worse than 30% in each of its last four games and bottomed out in Saturdayâs loss to SEC-leading Alabama, making just 3 of 28 shots from deep.
With the loss, Ole Miss (9-11, 1-7) stayed buried at the bottom of the SEC standings with its eighth defeat in nine games. Daeshun Ruffin led Kermit Davisâ team with 18 points.
Hodge came into the game making just 4 of 25 3s over the last four games. He had 14 points by halftime, more than heâs scored since a Jan. 7 win over Vanderbilt. With Gomillion nursing a groin injury, Mosley made his first start in a Mizzou uniform and became the ninth different MU player to start a game this season. He drained back-to-back 3s during a first-half run to give the Tigers their biggest lead, 44-28.
But without leading scorer Matthew Murrell, out with a knee injury, the Rebels pecked away at the Tigersâ lead late in the half and used their advantage on the glass during a 13-3 run over the final couple minutes. Mizzou connected on just one field goal in the halfâs last four minutes as Ole Miss closed within six points by halftime.
The Tigers quickly restored order in the second half, getting a boost off the bench from 6-foot-10 junior college transfer Mohamed Diarra. With more minutes in place of former starter Ronnie DeGray III, Diarra continued to capitalize with much-needed action on the boards. Early in the second half, Diarra grabbed an offensive rebound off a missed jumper and found Hodge in the corner for a rare second-chance 3-pointer for the Tigers. Later, Diarra knocked down his second 3 of the season to give him a season-high nine points, then finished a strong shift on the floor with a put-back. He finished with 11 points and a team-best six rebounds.
Gomillion, a starter in the last nine games, missed the first game in his four-year Division I college career. The co-captain averages 5.3 points and 2.7 rebounds and plays a critical defensive role on the perimeter. Heâs considered day to day. The Tigers next play Saturday against No. 12 Iowa State in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge.
