ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- There was a sense of déjà vu for Juwan Howard and the Michigan Wolverines after Saturday's one-point Big Ten matchup.
Michigan's 62-61 loss to No. 18 Indiana Hoosiers in Ann Arbor cost the Wolverines a key opportunity to boost their résumé for the NCAA tournament. A win would have helped the program get back into the Selection Sunday conversation. With a loss and a series of tough tests ahead, the Wolverines will need a strong finish to avoid the NIT.
For Juwan Howard, Indiana was once again a problem in a one-point loss, three decades later. On Feb. 14, 1993, Howard scored 15 points in then-No. 4 Michigan's 93-92 loss at then-No. 1 Indiana.
Michigan's Fab Five -- Howard, Chris Webber, Jimmy King, Ray Jackson and Jalen Rose -- anchored one of the best teams in college basketball from 1991 to '93, but the Hoosiers were always a problem for that legendary crew.
The Fab Five finished 1-3 against Indiana.
As a coach, however, Howard had amassed a 3-1 record against the Hoosiers entering Saturday's game. Plus, Indiana hadn't won at Michigan since 2016.
But the Hoosiers left with the win in another one-point game that involved Howard.
The comparisons don't stop there. Howard's son and Wolverines guard Jett Howard finished with 12 points on five field goals Saturday. The elder Howard also finished with five field goals in his team's loss to Indiana 30 years ago.
Michigan's NCAA tournament hopes are still alive, but the window is closing.
Road games against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, Illinois Fighting Illini and Indiana, plus a pair of matchups against the bubble-worthy Wisconsin Badgers, remain on Michigan's slate.
