Dijonai Carrington did not mean to poke Caitlin Clark in the eye during the first round of the WNBA playoffs last month. However, a small subset of fans pushed a narrative that she did so on purpose in an attempt to injure the league’s biggest star because of her race and status within the league.
She mocked all of the people who don’t like her during a livestream on Instagram earlier this week.
Carrington, 26, is dating one of Clark’s teammates, NaLyssa Smith. Their on-again, off-again relationship started during their time at Baylor and has caused quite the stir throughout the 2024 WNBA season. Smith plays for the Indiana Fever. Her girlfriend repeatedly jabbed at her rookie teammate and her team during the first few weeks of the year. She later poked Clark in the eye.
The incident created a discourse that took over the sports world for almost a full week as people debated, at nauseam, whether the poke was on purpose. Even though Clark said it was a clear and obvious basketball play that was not done with intent, people continued to push the opposite narrative. Smith revealed that her girlfriend received death threats over what happened.
USA Today reporter Christine Brennan made things worse when she asked Carrington if the eye poke was intentional. The WNBA Player’s Association was so upset with the question that it released a statement calling for her removal from the beat.
It was exhausting.
Despite all of the frustration, Dijonai Carrington is able to laugh at what happened. NaLyssa Smith accidentally poked her in the eye while live on Instagram, which presented a perfect opportunity to mock all of the controversy.
