The Dallas Mavericks began trimming their roster a day after their first preseason game. The team announced that it requested waivers on A.J. Lawson on Monday.
Lawson played 20 minutes in the preseason opener, a 121-116 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies. In his final appearance with the team, he totaled eight points, three rebounds and two assists.
After bouncing around with the Atlanta Hawks and Minnesota Timberwolves, Lawson spent the last two seasons with the Mavericks and appeared in 56 games, including 10 playoff games. He averaged 3.4 points and 1.2 rebounds in 7.5 minutes per game.
In July, Lawson made his fourth appearance at Summer League in Las Vegas, a rare feat. It was his third time there with Dallas. After a slow start, he finished strong and averaged 18.4 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1.4 assists.
Lawson first signed a two-way contract with Dallas during the 2022-23 season. The Mavericks converted him from a two-way deal to a regular, four-year NBA contract last season.
Now cut loose and still only 24 years old, Lawson again finds himself looking for a team willing to take a chance on him.
