When the Dallas Mavericks traded to acquire JJ Redick from the New Orleans Pelicans, they knew they were getting one of the NBAs elite shooters. Throughout his long career, the veteran guard is among the league-leaders in three-point field goal makes, attempts and percentage. Yet, its what the Mavericks may not have known thats surprising.
Speaking with the media Friday, Mavericks GM Donnie Nelson relayed that Redick is excited to come to Dallas and play with Luka Doncic, who is one of his favorite players. But Nelson also spoke candidly about Redicks situation. Not only do the Mavericks not know when Redick will be available to play, but they also werent his preferred destination.
We want to make sure that heel is 100%, Nelson said, and so thats more of a situation were going to have a chance to maybe have him workout and then slowly, when its comfortable, to integrate and come to Dallas.
Redick has been out since the All-Star break as he recovers from a nonsurgical procedure on his right heel. Nelson said that Redick is in communication with Mavericks Director of Player Health and Performance Casey Smith, who has a relationship with Redick through USA Basketball. Still, there isnt a firm date when Redick is expected to join the team.
I dont have an exact timetable, Mavericks Head Coach Rick Carlisle said. I spoke with [Redick] earlier [Friday] and he said that its progressing. Hes not sure what the timetable is, but he was very upbeat about hes been doing better and better as time has gone along here. So, well certainly hope for the best.
The news that Redick wont be available for an indeterminate amount of time is surprising. It begs the question: How much, if anything, did Dallas know about the full extent of Redicks injury and recovery during the trade process? Its just one of many peculiar underlying circumstances unfolding as details emerge about the deal. Another is the fact that Redick didnt necessarily want to join the Mavericks.
I think the preference would have beenin a buy-out situationto be able to pick his location, but it didnt happen like that, Nelson said.
Thats not typical language from GMs after theyve swung a trade. Usually, they choose their words carefully and cage their speech in platitudes. Nelson did neither.
Of course, its not breaking news that Redick was eyeing a buyout so that he could join a title contender. Redick reportedly requested a trade earlier this season and as recently as the day before Thursdays trade deadline, there was still speculation that the Pelicans would buy-out Redick. It didnt happen.
Nelsons frank remarks unearthed more questions than answers about Dallas trade to acquire Redick. Some questions may never get answered. Regardless, the deal is done. In the end, despite all of the now known concerns surrounding Redicks availability, the Mavericks traded for him for one main reason. They wanted a shooter of his pedigree on the team.
I think JJ obviously is no stranger to playoff intensity and big shots in big moments, Nelson said. To put another shooter next to Luka is really important for us.
