60-Year-Old Man Dies After Brawl Among Fans at Vermont Middle School Basketball Game

A 60-year-old spectator died after a brawl broke out among fans in the crowd during a middle school basketball game in Vermont on Tuesday night, per ESPN.

Russell Giroux of Alburgh, Vermont, sought medical attention after state troopers arrived to Alburgh Community Education Center around 7 p.m. following a report of a large melee during a seventh- and eighth-grade boys' basketball game between Alburgh and St. Albans.

The troopers arrived after the brawl had ended, and Giroux was transported by ambulance to the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans, where he was pronounced dead. His death is being investigated by Vermont state police as well as the Grand Isle state's attorney's office.

Giroux's cause of death has yet to be determined. An autopsy is set to be conducted by the office of the state medical examiner.

Violence at youth sporting events has escalated in recent years. Two weeks ago, a shooting after an Oklahoma boys' basketball game caused one man to be taken to the hospital.
