Yankees hire ex-Mets GM Omar Minaya to Brian Cashman's staff

The New York Yankees continued adding more cooks to general manager Brian Cashman's kitchen on Thursday by hiring former Mets executive Omar Minaya.

The move comes a day after the team announced the addition of former San Francisco Giants GM Brian Sabean. The Yankees previously added longtime Chicago Cubs general manager Jim Hendry.

The 64-year-old Minaya joins the Yankees at a busy time. In addition to re-signing record-breaking slugger Aaron Judge to a nine-year, $360 million deal, Cashman has also added San Francisco Giants pitcher Carlos Rodon for six years and $162 million.

Minaya was famously MLB's first Latino GM with the Montreal Expos from 2002 until 2004 before joining the Mets for seven seasons. It was in Queens where Minaya made his biggest moves, signing former Boston Red Sox ace Pedro Martinez and All-Star outfielder Carlos Beltran.

The team would make only one postseason appearance during Minaya's tenure, losing the 2006 National League Championship Series to the St. Louis Cardinals in seven games.

After being dismissed in 2010, Minaya went on to join the San Diego Padres front office, worked with the players' union, and then rejoined the Mets as a special assistant in November of 2020. He's also worked for MLB, doing amateur scouting.

The 66-year-old Sabean helped lead the San Francisco Giants to World Series titles in 2010, '12 and '14. He was the Giants' general manager from 1996 until 2014, then was promoted to executive vice president of baseball operations from 2015-18.

Sabean and Minaya's arrival in the Bronx is curious, given the team's 13-year pennant drought and fans' calls for Cashman's removal. Another failure to advance in the postseason could push owner Hal Steinbrenner to make some changes in the front office, and if he does make a move, Sabean and Minaya would represent two experienced in-house candidates.
