Update: The moment I published this, Microsoft has confirmed that yes, MLB: The Show 21 will debut on Xbox Game Pass (minus PC) on April 20, a monumental moment for the formerly Sony exclusive franchise. Heres what Microsoft had to say about it:
Were delighted to announce that MLB The Show 21 is coming to Xbox Game Pass on day one and will be available on April 20 for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, as well as on Android phones and tablets via Xbox Cloud Gaming (Beta) for Ultimate members. Both MLB The Show 21 Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S Standard Editions will be included with Xbox Game Pass so members will be able to play the best version of the game regardless of which console theyre on. And with cross-platform play and progress, you can play against others online, and earn and use content across the platform and generation you choose.
Incredible. Original article follows with more of the context for what a big deal this is:
Alright, I know that Xbox Game Pass has some impressive powers of seduction, getting third party games like Destiny 2: Beyond Light and Outriders on the service, but this would be a whole other level.
According to tweet below, Xbox Game Pass is teasing the addition of a new baseball game:
And I mean, what other baseball game is there in the modern era besides MLB: The Show, where its 2021 installment is out in under three weeks on April 20?
This would be a truly wild development, given that MLB: The Show has been a PlayStation franchise since its inception, and it was a big enough deal that Xbox was going to finally be getting The Show 21 this year. But to debut it on Game Pass? That would be an entirely new level and actively disadvantaging Sony, its former exclusive home.
San Diego Studio is literally a first party Sony studio and Sony Interactive is the publisher for MLB: The Show 21. And it might debut as a Game Pass exclusive? What size of check would Microsoft had to have written for that to happen? This is a level beyond giving a third party dev like Bungie or Square Enix some cash for their third party game, and if this pans out, it would be one of the craziest developments this generation, and in the history of Game Pass as an entity.
Between that teaser, and the fact that The Show comes out in just over two weeks, its genuinely hard to know what else this could be referring to. The Xbox account tweeted that video yesterday and there wasnt much to read into, given that we already knew The Show was coming to Xbox. But the Game Pass retweet calling it a tease (this account frequently teases Game Pass additions that pan out, as it did with Outriders) and thats why everyone is starting to freak out.
Well have to wait and see if an announcement is imminent, but even as someone who doesnt like baseball, real or video game-based, even I understand what a monumental deal this would be if it was true. And it opens the door to what else Xbox might be able to grab for Game Pass if something like this is possible for a steadfast Sony franchise. More to come.
