Philadelphia could make sporting history if Eagles LOSE the Super Bowl

Philadelphia may well be the ultimate sporting city, but it could find itself on the wrong side of history if the Eagles lose the Super Bowl later this month.

Incredibly, it could become the first city to have three consecutive sports teams lose in professional championship games, after its baseball and soccer teams recently fell at the final hurdle.

The first two occurred in the space of 24 hours in November, as the Phillies lost the World Series 4-2 to the Houston Astros, while the Union were on the losing side of a penalty shootout against Los Angeles FC in the MLS Cup final.

It resulted in a poor end to very impressive seasons for those two teams, and the Eagles will be desperate to avoid following in their footsteps when they travel to Arizona in a fortnight's time.

Despite the potential of a historic outcome, Philadelphia currently finds itself in the middle of an all-time year for its sports teams, with the Phillies and Union both unexpectedly finding themselves going for a championship.

The 76ers, meanwhile, are currently 20-4 in recent weeks, and 32-16 for the season as they sit second in the NBA's Eastern Conference and eye a run to the NBA Finals this season.

The Eagles' trip to the Super Bowl will be perhaps the most high-profile of the four teams, after they secured a blowout win over the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game on Sunday.

Quarterback Jalen Hurts put in an MVP-worthy performance to lead his team to a 31-7 win at Lincoln Financial Field, leading to wild celebrations on the streets of the city.

There were some unsavory scenes as riot police tried to quell the raucous crowds after the game, though, and some fans were filmed falling through a glass bus stop roof after they climbed it to continue the party.
