Mermaid Waters attempted robbery: Gold Coast man in undies chases down wannabe thieves

A man wearing nothing but his undies has been filmed taking on a group of men in a suburban street after they tried to steal from a home on Boxing Day.

Security footage shows a man running from a home in Mermaid Waters, in the Gold Coast, to chase down a group of men fleeing an attempted robbery early on Monday morning.

The video shows two men - including one with a shirt wrapped his head, concealing his face, sprinting towards two cars parked in the street as the vigilante tails behind them.

The resident - wearing only a pair of undies - managed to grab hold of one of the alleged robbers' shirts as he squirms in a bid to escape.

Two of the wannabee thieves rushed to their accomplice's aid, with one swinging a bat at the vigilante, who successfully bats him away.

The captured robber eventually wriggles free from his shirt and escapes from the man, before the group of five offenders manage to flee in the cars.

A Queensland Police spokesperson said officers were called to a Hood Court home about 4.40am to reports two male persons had unlawfully entered two vehicles.

'A 50-year-old male occupant at the property disturbed the pair,' the spokesperson said.

'Two other male persons have then confronted the man, producing a bat and knife, before a physical altercation has occurred in which the man sustained a minor cut to his hand.'

The spokesperson said the five alleged offenders left the scene in a silver BMW X4 and white Mazda CX-3.

The BMW was reported stolen from a Helensvale address this morning.

The Mazda has not been reported stolen at this stage.

Investigations are ongoing.
