Former New York Mets minor league pitcher Matt Pobereyko has died at the age of 31.

Pobereyko’s death was confirmed in a tweet by the Mexican Pacific winter baseball league on Feb. 25.

A native of Hammond, Ind., Pobereyko bounced around the minor and independent leagues for several years, spending time at different levels of the Arizona Diamondbacks, New York Mets and Miami Marlins organizations. He spent parts of the 2017 and 2018 seasons with the Columbia Fireflies, St. Lucie Mets, Binghamton Rumble Ponies and Las Vegas 51s in Triple-A, compiling a 3.34 ERA over 42 games.

Most recently Pobereyko pitched in the Mexican Pacific winter league for Algodoneros de Guasave and tossed 73 strikeouts in 70 and 1/3 innings. He also pitched earlier this month for Mexico in in the Caribbean World Series in Venezuela.

According to NBC News, Pobereyko collapsed in his Warrenville, Ill. home and was found unresponsive later.

“He just dropped and that’s all we know,” his brother Daniel Pobereyko told NBC News. “We don’t know. There’s nothing outstanding on the autopsy. But from what I understand he would have gotten a clean bill of health if he had a pulse.”

No cause of death was released, but MLB reporter Hector Gomez said Pobereyko died of a heart attack.

Several of Pobereyko’s former teams also mourned him on Twitter.

“It is with a heavy heart that we learned of the passing of former Saints pitcher (’20) Matt Pobereyko,” the St. Paul Saints said. “He was an incredible teammate and fierce competitor, but an even nicer person. He will be missed by all that knew him. We send our love to his family and friends.”
