Former Miami Marlins minor league pitcher Matt Pobereyko has died at the age of 31.
Pobereyko’s death was confirmed by the Mexican Pacific winter baseball league in a tweet on Feb. 25.
The Hammond, Indiana native bounced around the minor and independent leagues for several years (2016-22), including stints at different levels with the Arizona Diamondbacks, New York Mets and Marlins organizations. He was signed by the Marlins on July 17, 2021 and assigned to the Pensacola Blue Wahoos in Double-A, compiling a 1.17 ERA with six walks and 21 strikeouts in 12 games.
His time in the Mets system included one game with the Las Vegas 51s in Triple-A, the highest level Pobereyko reached in his career. He also spent the 2018 season with the St. Lucie Mets.
Pobereyko, who graduated from Kentucky Wesleyan in 2015, most recently pitched in the Mexican Pacific winter league for Algodoneros de Guasave, compiling 73 strikeouts in 70 1/3 innings. He also pitched earlier this month for Mexico in the Caribbean World Series in Venezuela.
According to NBC News, Pobereyko collapsed in his Warrenville, Ill. home and was found unresponsive later.
“He just dropped and that’s all we know,” his brother Daniel Pobereyko told NBC News. “We don’t know. There’s nothing outstanding on the autopsy. But from what I understand he would have gotten a clean bill of health if he had a pulse.”
No cause of death was released, but MLB reporter Hector Gomez said Pobereyko died of a heart attack.
