Elton John Achieves EGOT Status With First Emmy Win

In the entertainment world, the ultimate goal for the most ambitious artists is an EGOT. The acronym includes the first letter of all four of the top prizes in entertainment–Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony. As of last night’s Emmy Awards, there’s a new entrant into the exclusive club.

Elton John won his first Emmy at the 2024 ceremony of the best in television. The piano player and singer earned the trophy in the Outstanding Variety Special (Live) category. He and his co-producers came out on top for his Disney+ special Elton John: Farewell from Dodger Stadium.

The special focused on John’s last concert at Dodger Stadium. The show was part of the superstar’s years-long trek around the world on what he has called his final tour. John played the venue decades ago, so the space meant something very special to him and his legion of fans. The recorded show features plenty of references to his first concert at the stadium–including his famous sequined baseball uniform, which made a comeback, albeit in a slightly altered form.

John is now one of only a handful of multi-talented people who have won at least one of each of the four prizes named in the EGOT acronym. Depending on how one counts a win–there’s debate about whether non-competitive trophies count–there are at least 19 members of the group.

Aside from John, the most recent addition to the club is Viola Davis, who won her first Grammy last year. The group of EGOT-ers also includes beloved figures like John Legend, Jennifer Hudson, Whoopi Goldberg, and others. The first artist to complete the EGOT was Richard Rodgers, who did so in 1962.

John began his EGOT journey in 1987 when he won his first Grammy. He then added an Oscar in 1995. The composer collected his Tony in 2000, and he had to wait nearly a quarter-century to finish the acronym.

Impressively, John has more than just one of each of the necessary awards to become an EGOT star. He’s won six Grammys and a pair of Oscars. And those sums don’t include the nominations he's earned throughout his career that didn’t result in a win.
