Bill de Blasio mocked for wearing Nets jersey as he unveils new mobile COVID vaccination site

New York City mayor Bill de Blasio was branded a 'doofus' after wearing a basketball vest under his shirt to announce a new mobile vaccination site.

The outgoing mayor comically decided to wear a Brooklyn Nets jersey and matching baseball cap to the press conference.

De Blasio donned the black jersey under his usual smart shirt, which he left unbuttoned, and opted for a number - 13 - assigned to the team's newest star James Harden.

The mayor donned the unusual smart-casual mix to unveil a vaccination site at Brooklyn's Barclays Center - the home of the Nets.

But his choice of outfit attracted far more attention than the announcement itself, and Twitter was soon awash with jokes.

De Blasio was not afraid to get in on the joke himself afterwards, tweeting a photo of himself in the outfit, and writing, 'Ya know what they say, dress for the job you want!'

Still, the rest of Twitter was relentless.

'The last thing you see before you're priced out of your neighborhood,' The Daily Show tweeted.

One person tweeted that de Blasio was a replacement for LaMarcus Aldridge, a player who retired for medical reasons earlier in the season.

Another person said de Blasio was 'committing,' as it didn't appear he was wearing a shirt under his jersey.

Vinson Cunningham posted that it was 'not too late to impeach' de Blasio, whose term is set to end this year.

One user said that de Blasio appeared to be 'spiraling,' while another thought the image was a 'deep fake.'

Another thought that the image could've been photoshopped.

This is not the first time de Blasio has pulled this kind of stunt during a press conference recently.

Last week, de Blasio pulled out a burger and fries from Shake Shack during his press conference to promote the company's offer of free fries for those in the city with a vaccination card.

'I want you to look at these French fries and think about how great it is to get vaccinated,' de Blasio said while eating his breakfast. 'Mmmm… vaccination,' he added while taking a bite.

One person even referenced the infamous Shake Shack bit while commented on the new Nets gear de Blasio was wearing.

De Blasio did ultimately announce a mobile vaccination site at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, where some could win free tickets to a Nets playoff game.

'This is going to be another extraordinary effort to get people vaccinated and keep everyone safe,' de Blasio said as the pace of vaccinations in the city continues to wane.

The Patch reports that de Blasio did eventually change out of his basketball gear and into something more suitable for his position.

Still, some people were bitter that de Blasio may have put a curse upon the Nets by wearing their jersey and hat.

At least one fan of the rival New York Knicks saw it the opposite way: 'Thrilled that it wasnt [sic] a Knicks jersey,' they tweeted.
