Two young siblings who disappeared from Missouri in 2022 were found with their fugitive mother, all dressed in disguise, at a Florida supermarket Wednesday.
Brooke and Adrian Gilley, 11 and 12, respectively, went missing in March last year. They were believed to have been kidnapped by their biological mother, who did not have legal custody of them at the time.
The three were found at a Winn-Dixie market in High Springs, Florida, after a routine vehicle tag check on the car of their 36-year-old mother, Kristi Gilley, KMBC 9 News reported.
The traffic check revealed that Kristi was on the run from Missouri police.
High Springs police located Kristi and her children inside the supermarket as they were shopping. She was detained and arrested on an active kidnapping warrant out of Clay County, Missouri, People reported, citing a statement from authorities.
As of this writing, no details have been provided as to why Kristi was stripped of guardianship and how she managed to abduct the kids, the New York Post reported.
Kristi remained in prison in Florida as of Sunday, and she will be transferred to Missouri to face charges there.
William Miller, Kristi's previous lawyer, told People that she "has retained private counsel."
An update from Liberty police department in Missouri said, "Both Gilley kids have been safely located out of state. Their non-custodial mother is in custody on parental kidnapping charges ... Thank you to everyone who shared this post as it helped bring these children home."
The two minors were turned over to the Florida Department of Children and Families and will be handed over to their Missouri relatives, officials confirmed. Brooke and Adrian were reportedly found in good health.
Kristi initially kidnapped the children from Clay County, a suburb of Kansas City, and managed to avoid authorities for almost a year.
