The most annoying fan in college sports made his return to the stadium on Tuesday. The Vandy Whistler is back as the Commodores played their first home game of the year.
His presence is unwelcomed news to opposing fans who plan on visiting Nashville for a college baseball game. Many quickly posted their reactions to his return online.
Vanderbilt began its 2023 season over the weekend as a part of the College Baseball Showdown. That tournament took place at Globe Life Field in Arlington, the home of the Texas Rangers.
The Commodores had a fantastic showing in that event, winning two of three matchups over Big XII foes. After dropping their opener to No. 15 TCU, they took down No. 9 Oklahoma State and Texas in consecutive meetings.
Vandy had to do that without the support of their famed whistler, but on Tuesday, the Commodores returned to Nashville for their home opener.
And, of course, their most notable fan was in attendance.
The Vandy Whistler’s real name is Preacher Franklin, and he’s beloved by all supporters of the university. Unfortunately, his high-pitched shrieks sound like nails on a chalkboard to every other fan in America.
Many were quick to respond upon hearing that annoying screech yet again.
One person wrote, “The most obnoxious tradition in college athletics is back for another year,” while another commented, “Stop encouraging this vile behavior.”
This fan said, “Still obnoxious as hell.”
Franklin’s presence wasn’t enough to pull the Commodores through in their home opener as they dropped a 5-4 decision to Central Arkansas. With that loss, the team fell to 2-2 on the year.
There are certainly those that will be upset with the Vandy Whistler’s return, but at least it signals one thing. College baseball season is officially underway.
